It makes sense that if it is 20 degrees outside the heating and air conditioning systems aren’t going to have to do very much work. That temperature is easy for them to maintain because it's the set point. In fact, to go against the external climate it actually requires the heating and cooling systems to work HARDER against the external conditions to maintain a comfortable temperature inside.
(PS Don’t confuse comfortable with happy. They are not the same thing. In fact, sitting cozied up on the couch watching netflix might be comfortable but you may be sitting there wishing you had the willpower or motivation to get off the couch and go to the gym so you aren’t so unhappy with your body and your health… Too often we become familiar with our own discomfort to the point where that discomfort becomes our normal - it ironically becomes our comfort zone.)
Similarly to the thermostat, your current life situation — your health, your relationships, and your career — is being actively maintained by your internal self-identity, ensuring it stays in line with what you subconsciously believe you deserve or are capable of. That is your set point.
Sometimes you may find yourself in a situation where you are resisting reality, living in disbelief - arguing with the facts or seeking evidence to support your own beliefs -
Let's say for example you join a gym and you are on a fat loss journey. You look at the people around you and convince yourself that they just have good genetics and got lucky and that YOUR journey is going to be much harder because you have poor genetics. That is not a fact. It's not even reality, and likely so far from the truth …
But yet you entertain that Idea and feel discouragement and resentment. You have created those feelings based on your beliefs and your identity. Your thermostat. Despite the PROOF that surrounds you, the hundreds of people who have successfully achieved the level of fitness that you desire, you feel defeated before you even get started and retreat to the comfort of your couch and sedentary lifestyle.
Now let's look at this, and intentionally changing your thermostat to someone who is becoming healthy and fit - you join a gym and you are on a fat loss journey. You actively work to change your beliefs about the other people at the gym and believe that their success is EVIDENCE that you can do it too. You feel inspired, excited and determined. The gym becomes a part of your regular routine because of a change in your internal set point, a change in your beliefs about who you are. Now you are the person who is becoming fit. Not the person who is unfit.
Your current identity and beliefs, preserve a consistent comfort zone, orchestrating your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. Let’s go deeper and find out how you can change your internal set point!
Changing your internal set point
I’m going to tell you right now, that this isn’t easy. Your current belief systems and set point have been shaped over the course of your life. But - it's possible! By incorporating these 3 key elements into your life, you can change your thermostat and adjust it to a temperature that aligns with your health, wealth, and relationship goals.
Faith: Trusting the Unseen Universe
Everyone sees faith a little differently, Ed Mylett speaks of faith as a belief in an altruistic universe, which, even in the darkest moments, operates for our collective good.
Two books that helped me with faith were
Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill
Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks
The takeaway that I had from those books, is that what you feel you attract, and what you believe you create.
The universe is not conspiring against you - it is simply offering you everything that you focus on.
The universe isn’t unfair, it's simply responding to your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that you hold to create your reality. Once you recognize that, you can really truly tap into abundance, gratitude and excitement that will help you fabricate the life of your dreams.
Intention: Steering Progress with Purpose
Intention is comparable to selecting a specific temperature on your thermostat. You desire to be wealthy, in a healthy relationship, in a physically fit body.. Set out each day with intentions that align with those desires.
Intentions to be kind, to listen actively, to put more effort into daily movement. Whatever intention serves you and aligns with your goals, are the intentions that you want to focus on. Our intentions can accelerate progress and help us change the thermostat setting more quickly -
On the flipside lack of intention can work against us when we allow life to push us around and every interaction, event, or experience to change our temperature.
Proximity: Absorbing and Emitting Energies
Energy and heat transfer via conduction. Your proximity to the people around you - their health, relationships, financial status, parenting approaches, and business ethics will influence your thermostat.
Are they turning the heat up for you? Encouraging you? Instilling positive belief and faith? Inspiring you?
Or do you see them, and hope that you don’t turn out like them?
If that's the case.. I suggest you create some distance between you and those people.
Your environment isn’t merely about the physical presence of others but what you permit to infiltrate your space and influence your internal thermostat - what are you consuming? Reading? Watching?
If you want to raise your thermostat up a few degrees, time to surround yourself with others who are in the position you would like to be in.
Conclusion
I hope you’ve had some “aha moments” and feel inclined to nudge your internal thermostat, bringing you much closer to who you want to be and where you want to land in life.
